Japanese Cinderella Authenticated by Secret Credential

I recently came to know that there was a Japanese-version of Cinderella translated 122 years ago as ‘Story of Ocin’ by TSUBOUCHI Shoyo, respected writer in those days.

While the flow of the story is mostly the same as Cinderella, the glass slippers were replaced by a folding fan in ‘Story of Ocin’.

Cinderella was ‘identified’ by the biometric features of her feet, while Ocin was ‘authenticated’ by her memory of the design of her fan.

Ocin was able to describe the design of her fan precisely from her solid memory when challenged by the prince who brought a ‘folded’ fan and said “The girl I am looking for must be able to describe the design of this fan”.

The size and shape of glass slippers may be more or less ‘unique’ but not ‘secret’, while the design of Ocin’s fan may not be particularly ‘unique’ but her memory of it is ‘secret’.

The Japanese novelist might have noticed that the story of Cinderella would collapse if we presume some other girls whose feet are no larger than Cinderella’s.
