I suspect that such a foolish case may well have happened due to those security people being so indifferent to the basics of authentication that ‘Identification’ and ‘Authentication’ are two separate technology domains.

It could be compared to “Attempts to make whatever applies to the trains that have to run on fixed railways applied to the automobiles that can run in any direction”.
